RESUMEN

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurologic autoimmune disease whose exact pathophysiologic mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Recent studies have shown that the onset and progression of MS are associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Similarly, a large body of evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction may also have a significant impact on the development of MS. Endosymbiotic theory has found that human mitochondria are microbial in origin and share similar biological characteristics with the gut microbiota. Therefore, gut microbiota and mitochondrial function crosstalk are relevant in the development of MS. However, the relationship between gut microbiota and mitochondrial function in the development of MS is not fully understood. Therefore, by synthesizing previous relevant literature, this paper focuses on the changes in gut microbiota and metabolite composition in the development of MS and the possible mechanisms of the crosstalk between gut microbiota and mitochondrial function in the progression of MS, to provide new therapeutic approaches for the prevention or reduction of MS based on this crosstalk.

The chemical investigation of the roots of Lindera glauca guided the isolation and identification of three new sesquiterpenoids, namly glaucatotones J-L (1-3), and one known congener, (1ß,5ß)-1-hydroxyguaia-4(15),11(13)-dieno-12,5-lactone (4). The structures of new compounds were established based on comprehensive spectrographic methods, mainly including 1D & 2D NMR and HRESIMS analyses, and the absolute configurations were further confirmed by the comparison of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The cytotoxicity activities of isolates were evaluated, and the results showed that they have moderate cytotoxic activities.

Introduction: Cerebral ischaemic stroke is a common disease that poses a serious threat to human health. Butyrate is an important metabolite of intestinal microorganisms. Recent studies have shown that butyrate has a significant protective effect in animal models of cerebral ischaemic injury. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of butyrate on cerebral ischaemic stroke by meta-analysis, aiming to provide a scientific basis for the clinical application of butyrate in patients with cerebral ischaemia. Materials and methods: A systematic search was conducted for all relevant studies published before 23 January 2024, in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase. Methodological quality was assessed using Syrcle's risk of bias tool for animal studies. Data were analysed using Rev Man 5.3 software. Results: A total of nine studies were included, and compared with controls, butyrate significantly increased BDNF levels in the brain (SMD = 2.33, 95%CI = [1.20, 3.47], p < 0.005) and P-Akt expression (SMD = 3.53, 95% CI = [0.97, 6.10], p < 0.05). Butyrate also decreased IL-ß levels in the brain (SMD = -2.02, 95% CI = [-3.22, -0.81], p < 0.005), TNF-α levels (SMD = -0.86, 95% CI = [-1.60, -0.12], p < 0.05), and peripheral vascular IL-1ß levels (SMD = -2.10, 95%CI = [-3.59, -0.61], p < 0.05). In addition, butyrate reduced cerebral infarct volume (MD = -11.29, 95%CI = [-17.03, -5.54], p < 0.05), mNSS score (MD = -2.86, 95%CI = [-4.12, -1.60], p < 0.005), foot fault score (MD = -7.59, 95%CI = [-9.83, -5, 35], p < 0.005), and Morris water maze time (SMD = -2.49, 95%CI = [-4.42, -0.55], p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that butyrate has a protective effect on cerebral ischaemic stroke in animal models, and the mechanism is related to reducing inflammation and inhibiting apoptosis. It provides an evidence-based basis for the future clinical development of butyrate in the treatment of ischaemic stroke. Glaucatotones A - I, nine new guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids, along with two reported compounds, namely (1ß,5ß)-1-hydroxyguaia-4(15),11(13)-dieno-12,5-lactone (10) and pseudoguaianelactone C (11), were isolated from the roots of Lindera glauca. The structures and absolute configurations of these compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and comparison of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. Structurally, glaucatotone A (1) is characterized as a dihomosesquiterpenoid with an unprecedented 5/5/7/6 ring system. A pair of enantiomers, (±)-glaucatotone B (2a/2b), represent the first rearranged norsesquiterpenoid with a (cyclopentylmethyl)cyclohexane skeleton. 3 is defined as a dinorsesquiterpenoid possessing a 5/7/5 ring system. 4-6 are three guaiane-type norsesquiterpenoids. In vitro bioactivity, 2a selectively inhibited Bcap-37 with IC50 value of 5.60 µM, and 9 selectively inhibited Du-145 with IC50 value of 5.52 µM. The anti-inflammatory activity of 1-9 were tested, and of these compounds, 1, 2a, 2b and 7 exhibited potent inhibitory effects.

Sphingolipids (SPLs) represent a highly diverse and structurally complex lipid class. The discussion of SPL metabolism-related issues is of importance in understanding the neuropathological progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular deposits of the amyloid ß-peptide (Aß) and intraneuronal aggregates of the microtubule-associated protein tau. Critical roles of Aß oligomer deposited and ganglioside GM1 could be formed as "seed" from insoluble GAß polymer in initiating the pathogenic process, while tau might also mediate SPLs and their toxicity. The interaction between ceramide and α-Synuclein (α-Syn) accelerates the aggregation of ferroptosis and exacerbates the pathogenesis of AD. For instance, reducing the levels of SPLs can mitigate α-Syn accumulation and inhibit AD progression. Meanwhile, loss of SPLs may inhibit the expression of APOE4 and confer protection against AD, while the loss of APOE4 expression also disrupts SPLs homeostasis. Moreover, the heightened activation of sphingomyelinase promotes the ferroptosis signaling pathway, leading to exacerbated AD symptoms. Ferroptosis plays a vital role in the pathological progression of AD by influencing Aß, tau, APOE, and α-Syn. Conversely, the development of AD also exacerbates the manifestation of ferroptosis and SPLs. We are compiling the emerging techniques (Derivatization and IM-MS) of sphingolipidomics, to overcome the challenges of AD diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we examined the intricate neuro-mechanistic interactions between SPLs and Aß, tau, α-Syn, APOE, and ferroptosis, mediating the onset of AD. Furthermore, our findings highlight the potential of targeting SPLs as underexplored avenue for devising innovative therapeutic strategies against AD.

The performance of the human finger is a significant inspiration for designing soft robotic fingers that can achieve high speed and high force or perform delicate and complex tasks. Existing soft grippers and actuators can be excellent in specific capabilities. However, it is still challenging for them to meet an all-around performance as the human finger, characterized by high actuation speed, wide grasping range, sensing ability, and gentle and high-load grasping capability. The proposed tendon pulley quadrastable (TPQ) finger has combined these qualities in the conducted gripping tasks. A pair of elastic tendons is utilized as the sole energy reservoir to create a novel energy distribution pattern: energy-coupled quadrastability. An energy model is built to analyze and predict the behaviors of the TPQ finger. Mechanical instability is utilized to enhance the actuation speed. The proposed soft lever mechanism endows the TPQ finger with sensing ability. The energy barrier adjusting plates control the energy barrier, adjusting the sensitivity of both active and passive actuation mechanisms. The transition of four stable states forms preplanned trajectories that are applied to create multiple grasping manners. Experiments show that it can respond to stimuli and finish a grasping task in merely 31 ms, and its payload can reach 33.25 kg. At the same time, it can also handle fragile objects such as a piece of rose and grasp a wide range of objects ranging from a thin nut (3.3 mm in height) or a thin card (0.76 mm thick) to a football (220 mm).

We demonstrate the measurement of super low-frequency electric field using Rydberg atoms in an atomic vapor cell with inside parallel electrodes, thus overcoming the low-frequency electric-field-screening effect at frequencies below a few kHz. Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra involving 52D5/2 state is employed to measure the signal electric field. An auxiliary DC field is applied to improve the sensitivity. A DC Stark map is demonstrated, where the utilized 52D5/2 exhibits mj = 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 Stark shifts and splittings. The mj = 1/2 state is employed to detect the signal field because of its larger polarizability than that of mj = 3/2, 5/2. Also, we show that the strength of the spectrum is dependent on the angle between the laser polarizations and the electric field. With optimization of the applied DC field to shift the mj = 1/2 Rydberg energy level to a high sensitivity region and the laser polarizations to obtain the maximum mj = 1/2 signal, we achieve the detection of the signal electric field with a frequency of 100 Hz down to 214.8 µV/cm with a sensitivity of 67.9 µV cm-1Hz-1/2, and the linear dynamic range is over 37 dB. Our work extends the measurement frequency of Rydberg sensors to super low frequency with high sensitivity, which has the advantages of high sensitivity and miniaturization for receiving super low frequency.

Introduction: Every-other-day fasting (EODF) is a classical intermittent fasting (IF) mode with neuroprotective effects that promotes motor function recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI) in rats. However, its dynamic effects on the gut microbiota and spinal cord transcriptome remain unknown. Methods: In this study, 16S rRNA sequencing and RNA-seq analysis were used to investigate the effects of ad libitum (AL) and EODF dietary modes on the structural characteristics of rat gut microbiota in rats and the spinal cord transcriptome at various time points after SCI induction. Results: Our results showed that both dietary modes affected the bacterial community composition in SCI rats, with EODF treatment inducing and suppressing dynamic changes in the abundances of potentially anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory bacteria. Furthermore, the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) enriched after EODF intervention in SCI rats were associated with various biological events, including immune inflammatory response, cell differentiation, protein modification, neural growth, and apoptosis. In particular, significant spatiotemporal differences were apparent in the DEGs associated with neuroprotection between the EODF and AL interventions. These DGEs were mainly focused on days 1, 3, and 7 after SCI. The relative abundance of certain genera was significantly correlated with DEGs associated with neuroprotective effects in the EODF-SCI group. Discussion: Our results showed that EODF treatment may exert neuroprotective effects by modulating the transcriptome expression profile following SCI in rats. Furthermore, gut microbiota may be partially involved in mediating these effects.

Background: Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death linked to gynecological cancers. Notch1, as an important component of Notch signaling, plays an important role in a variety of cancers. This study aims to discuss the mechanisms through which Notch 1 influences the development of ovarian cancer. Methods: To design and establish the short hairpin (sh) RNA for targeting Notch 1, we transfected THP-1 cells (one of the human macrophagic lines). The cells were divided into shRNA negative control (NC) group and the Notch 1 shRNA group. The CoC1 cells and THP-1 cells (human mononuclear macrophages) are co-cultured, which are injected into the nude mice subcutaneously based on proposition. The sizes of tumors and their volumes are observed through HE staining. Flow cytometry is used to sort out macrophages from subcutaneous tumors of nude mice, whose protein-related expression is detected through western blot. Then the NC group and the Notch 1 shRNA group in the co-culture system are treated with PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor-13 sodium (200 nM) for 48h and then co-cultured with human endothelial cell lines HUVEC, CoC1, and THP-1 to test the tube-forming capacity of HUVEC cells in each group to detect the protein-related expression in THP-1 cells using western blot. Results: It is seen that the Notch 1 shRNA group includes a significantly larger tumor size, decreased relative expression, and the obvious increase of the relative protein expression in p-PI3K, p-mTOR, HIF1α, and VEGF compared with the NC group. Through tube-forming experiments, the Notch1 shRNA group significantly increased the number of HUVEC tubes. However, after the use of PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor-13 sodium, the number of tubes decreased in the NC and Notch1 shRNA groups, and there is no significant discrepancy in comparison to the NC group. The in vitro western blotting results indicate no obvious variation of Notch 1's relative protein expression in both the NC group and Notch 1 shRNA group after the use of PI3K/mTOR Inhibitor-13 sodium, while the relative protein expression of p-PI3K, p-mTOR, HIF1α, and VEGF was significantly reduced and there was no significant difference. Conclusion: This study found that specific knockout of Notch 1 in tumor-associated macrophages will promote the activation of the PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway and the expression of HIF1α and VEGF, thus promoting angiogenesis and the development of ovarian cancer. Thus, this study provides insight into novel prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for the treatment and research of ovarian cancer.

A gelatin hydrolysate with a hydrolysis degree of 13.7% was generated using the skin gelatin of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) and papain-catalyzed enzymatic hydrolysis. The results of analysis demonstrated that four amino acids, namely Ala, Gly, Pro, and 4-Hyp, were the most abundant in the obtained gelatin hydrolysate with measured molar percentages ranging from 7.2% to 35.4%; more importantly, the four amino acids accounted for 2/3 of the total measured amino acids. However, two amino acids, Cys and Tyr, were not detected in the generated gelatin hydrolysate. The experimental results indicated that the gelatin hydrolysate at a dose of 50 µg/mL could combat etoposide-induced apoptosis in human fetal osteoblasts (hFOB 1.19 cells), causing a decrease in the total apoptotic cells from 31.6% to 13.6% (via apoptotic prevention) or 13.3% to 11.8% (via apoptotic reversal). Meanwhile, the osteoblasts exposed to the gelatin hydrolysate showed expression changes for 157 genes (expression folds > 1.5-fold), among which JNKK, JNK1, and JNK3 were from the JNK family with a 1.5-2.7-fold downregulated expression. Furthermore, the protein expressions of JNKK, JNK1, JNK3, and Bax in the treated osteoblasts showed a 1.25-1.41 fold down-regulation, whereas JNK2 expression was not detected in the osteoblasts. It is thus suggested that gelatin hydrolysate is rich in the four amino acids and has an in vitro antiapoptotic effect on etoposide-stimulated osteoblasts via mitochondrial-mediated JNKK/JNK(1,3)/Bax downregulation.

Bovine lactoferrin (LF) per 1 g was reacted with 0.16, 0.32, and 0.64 mg CuCl2 to reach 10%, 20%, and 40% copper-saturation, respectively, aiming to assess their anti-inflammatory activities to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. The macrophages treated with CuCl2 at 0.051 µg/mL dose did not have obvious change in cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. However, LF and Cu-fortified LF products (10-80 µg/mL doses) mostly showed inhibitory effects on the stimulated macrophages dose-dependently. Moreover, Cu-fortified LF products of lower Cu-fortifying levels at lower doses exerted weaker inhibition on the stimulated macrophages than LF, leading to higher cell viability but decreased LDH release. Meanwhile, LF and Cu-fortified LF products at 10 and 20 µg/mL doses showed different activities to the stimulated cells, via partly decreasing or increasing the production of inflammatory mediators namely prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), nitric oxide, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1ß, and ROS production, depending on the used Cu-fortifying and dose levels. Compared with LF, Cu-fortified LF product (Cu-fortifying level of 0.16 mg/g LF) at 10 µg/mL dose showed enhanced inhibition on the production of PGE2, ROS, IL-1ß, and TNF-α, evidencing increased anti-inflammatory activity. However, the inhibition of Cu-fortified LF product (Cu-fortifying level of 0.32 mg/g LF) at 20 µg/mL dose on the production of these inflammatory mediators was mostly reduced. It is thus proposed that both Cu-fortifying and dose levels could affect LF's anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-stimulated macrophages, while the Cu-fortifying level of LF could govern activity change.

The quantitative analysis of near-infrared spectroscopy in traditional Chinese medicine has still deficiencies in the selection of the measured indexes. Then Paeoniae Radix Alba is one of the famous "Eight Flavors of Zhejiang" herbs, however, it lacks the pharmacodynamic support, and cannot reflect the quality of Paeoniae Radix Alba accurately and reasonably. In this study, the spectrum-effect relationship of the anti-inflammatory activity of Paeoniae Radix Alba was established. Then based on the obtained bioactive component groups, the genetic algorithm, back propagation neural network, was combined with near-infrared spectroscopy to establish calibration models for the content of the bioactive components of Paeoniae Radix Alba. Finally, three bioactive components, paeoniflorin, 1,2,3,4,6-O-pentagalloylglucose, and benzoyl paeoniflorin, were successfully obtained. Their near-infrared spectroscopy content models were also established separately, and the validation sets results showed the coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.85), indicating that good calibration statistics were obtained for the prediction of key pharmacodynamic components. As a result, an integrated analytical method of spectrum-effect relationship combined with near-infrared spectroscopy and deep learning algorithm was first proposed to assess and control the quality of traditional Chinese medicine, which is the future development trend for the rapid inspection of traditional Chinese medicine.

Eucommia ulmoides Oliver is a dioecious plant, which plays an important role in traditional Chinese medicine. However, there has not yet been any research on male and female E. ulmoides. The UPLC fingerprints and OPLS-DA approach were able to quickly and easily identify and quantify E. ulmoides and differentiate between the male and female fingerprints. In this study, we optimized the UPLC conditions and analyzed them to investigate fingerprints of twenty-four extracts of Eucommiae Cortex (EC) and twenty-four extracts of Eucommiae Folium (EF) under optimal conditions. It was demonstrated that thirteen and twelve substances were possible chemical markers for EC and EF male and female discrimination and that the level of these markers - chlorogenic acid and protocatechuic acid - was many times higher in male than in female. This approach offered a reference for quality control and precise treatment of male and female E. ulmoides in the clinic.

Insulating oil plays a crucial role in internal insulation of oil-impregnated transformers. It has been demonstrated in a variety of experimental studies that mineral oil (MO) and vegetable oil (VO) can be blended in different ratios to improve insulation properties; however, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. In this study, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approach was used to investigate diffusion of water molecules in VO/MO blends and dielectric constants of a mixture. The results show that the diffusion coefficient of water molecules is negatively correlated with the proportion of VO; thus, addition of VO helps to improve the insulation properties of a mixture. Due to introduction of strong polar functional groups, a decrease in the diffusion behavior of water molecules can be attributed to an increase in the interaction energy and formation of hydrogen bonds between water molecules and the mixed oil system. There is a direct correlation between the dielectric constant of a mixture and VO content; however, it is very sensitive to water content. The presence of strong polar water molecules or functional groups in a mixture leads to an increase in the dielectric constant, which results in a reduction in insulating properties. Accordingly, presence of polar groups plays an important role in determining the insulating properties of a mixture. To increase the insulation performance of a mixture, it is important to consider the diffusion-inhibiting and dielectric effects of the stronger polar groups in vegetable oil compared to those in mineral oil.

Background: Depression is a common mental illness that is widely recognized by its lack of pleasure, fatigue, low mood, and, in severe cases, even suicidal tendencies. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that could treat patients with mood disorders such as depression. Methods: A systematic search of ten databases, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for depression, was conducted from the time of library construction to September 25, 2023. The primary outcome was depression. The secondary outcome was sleep. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan (version 5.4) and Stata (version 14.0). Subgroup analyses were performed to identify sources of heterogeneity. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). Results: Three thousand two hundred and sixty-five studies were retrieved from the database and screened for inclusion in eleven trials. The forest plot results demonstrated that PBM alleviated depression (SMD = -0.55, 95% CI [-0.75, -0.35], I2 = 46%). But it is not statistically significant for patients' sleep outcomes (SMD = -0.82, 95% CI [-2.41, 0.77], I2 = 0%, p > 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that s-PBM was superior to t-PBM in relieving symptoms of depression. The best improvement for t-PBM was achieved using a wavelength of 823 nm, fluence of 10-100 J/cm2, irradiance of 50-100 mW/cm2, irradiance time of 30 min, treatment frequency < 3/week, and number of treatments >15 times. The best improvement for s-PBM was achieved using a wavelength of 808 nm, fluence ≤1 J/cm2, irradiance of 50-100 mW/cm2, irradiance time ≤ 5 min, treatment frequency ≥ 3/week, number of treatments >15 times. All results had evidence quality that was either moderate or very low, and there was no bias in publication. Conclusion: We conclude that PBM is effective in reducing depression symptoms in patients. However, the current number of studies is small, and further studies are needed to extend the current analysis results. BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the clinical efficacy of one-stage posterior surgery combined with anti-Brucella therapy in the treatment of lumbosacral brucellosis spondylitis (LBS). METHODS: From June 2010 to June 2020, the clinical and radiographic data of patients with LBS treated by one-stage posterior surgery combined with anti-Brucella therapy were retrospectively analyzed. The visual analogue scale (VAS), Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) and Oswestry Disability Index scores (ODI) were used to evaluate the clinical outcomes. Frankel's classification system was employed to access the initial and final neurologic function. Fusion of the bone grafting was classified by Bridwell's grading system. RESULTS: A total of 55 patients were included in this study with a mean postoperative follow-up time of 2.6 ± 0.8 years (range, 2 to 5). There were 40 males and 15 females with a mean age of 39.8 ± 14.7 years (range, 27 to 57). The Brucella agglutination test was ≥ 1:160 in all patients, but the blood culture was positive in 43 patients (78.1%). A statistical difference was observed in ESR, CRP, VAS, ODI, and JOA between preoperative and final follow-up (P < 0.05). Neurological function was significantly improved in 20 patients with preoperative neurological dysfunction after surgery. According to Bridwell's grading system, the fusion of bone grafting in 48 cases (87.2%) was defined as grade I, and grade II in 7 cases (12.7%). None of the infestation recurrences was observed. CONCLUSION: One-stage posterior surgery combined with anti-Brucella therapy was a practical method in the treatment of LBS with severe neurological compression and spinal sagittal imbalance.

Studies of local adaptation in populations of chinaberry (Melia azedarach L.) are important for clarifying patterns in the population differentiation of this species across its natural range. M. azedarach is an economically important timber species, and its phenotype is highly variable across its range in China. Here, we collected M. azedarach seeds from 31 populations across its range and conducted a common garden experiment. We studied patterns of genetic differentiation among populations using molecular markers (simple sequence repeats) and data on phenotypic variation in six traits collected over five years. Our sampled populations could be subdivided into two groups based on genetic analyses, as well as patterns of isolation by distance and isolation by environment. Significant differentiation in growth traits was observed among provenances and families within provenances. Geographic distance was significantly correlated with the quantitative genetic differentiation (QST) in height (HEIT) and crown breadth. Climate factors were significantly correlated with the QST for each trait. A total of 23 climatic factors were examined. There was a significant effect of temperature on all traits, and minimum relative humidity had a significant effect on the survival rate over four years. By comparing the neutral genetic differentiation (FST) with the QST, the mode of selection acting on survival rate varied, whereas HEIT and the straightness of the main trunk were subject to the same mode of selection. The variation in survival rate was consistent with the variation in genetic differentiation among populations, which was indicative of local adaptation. Overall, our findings provide new insights into the responses of the phenological traits of M. azedarach to changes in the climate conditions of China.

The two-stroke micro free piston swing engine (MFPSE) is a portable power device. Its seal performance plays an important role in the dynamic properties and efficiency of microengines. The present work established the leakage model of the two-stroke micro free piston swing engine by utilizing the compressible flow Reynolds Navier-Stokes equation. The obtained nondimensional mass leakage was related to the seal gap height, seal inlet pressure, size factor and compression ratio. Simulation investigated how the different seal gap heights and size factors affected the pressure, temperature and mass leakage of micro engines. The results showed that when the seal gap height of the combustion chamber increased, the maximum pressure and cycle power declined, obviously. However, the maximum temperature was scarcely affected. The mass leakage was not greatly impacted when the compression ratio was less than 5. However, the mass leakage dramatically increased when the seal gap was more than 10 µm or the size factor was less than 0.4. The investigation revealed these mass leakage effect factors and provided a guide for the seal and structure design of the two-stroke micro free piston swing engine.

Ferroelectrics with a high dielectric constant are ideal materials for the fabrication of miniaturized and integrated electronic devices. However, the dielectric constant of ferroelectrics varies significantly with the change of temperature, which is detrimental to the working stability of electronic devices. This work demonstrates a new strategy to design a ferroelectric dielectric with a high temperature stability, that is, the design of a multilayer relaxor ferroelectric thin film with a composition gradient. As a result, the fabricated up-graded (Pb,La)(Zr0.65,Ti0.35)O3 multilayer thin film showed a superior temperature stability of the dielectric constant, with variation less than 7% in the temperature range from 30 °C to 200 °C, and more importantly, the variation was less than 2.5% in the temperature range from 75 °C to 200 °C. This work not only develops a dielectric material with superior temperature stability, but also demonstrates a promising method to enhance the temperature stability of ferroelectrics.

BACKGROUND: The most commonly used approach for distal radius fractures is the traditional Henry approach. However, it requires an intraoperative incision of the pronator quadratus (PQ) muscle, which results in a series of complications if the repair of the PQ fails. AIM: The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of sparing the pronator quadratus for volar plating of the distal radius fractures. METHODS: Seventy-six patients who suffered from distal radius fractures of types 23-B, 23-C1, and 23-C2 as per the AO Foundation and Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification were treated with volar locking plate fixation using either the PQ muscle incision and repair (group A, n = 39) or the PQ muscle preservation approach (group B, n = 37). Intraoperative index, postoperative efficacy and complications of patients were recorded and evaluated. RESULTS: All patients were followed up for more than one year after surgery. All fractures achieved union. There were significant differences in mean operative time, mean intraoperative blood loss, and mean fracture healing time between the two groups. Still, there were no significant differences in limb function scores between the two groups at the 12-month postoperative follow-up. Outcomes assessed at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery demonstrated significant differences in the mean range of motion and pain-related visual analog scale (VAS) between the two groups. As the range of motion and grip strength increased, the VAS scores decreased, and there was no significant difference between the two groups at 12 months postoperatively. Although tendon irritation and delayed carpal tunnel syndrome were more common in group A than in group B (7.6% vs. 0% and 5.1% vs. 0%, respectively), the differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The modified Henry approach with sparing pronator quadratus muscle has no significant advantage in the range of wrist motion and upper limb function in the late stage. Nevertheless, the intraoperative placement of the plate under the pronator quadratus muscle can shorten the operation time, reduce intraoperative bleeding, reduce early postoperative pain, promote early activity, and improve the patient's quality of life. It is recommended that the pronator be preserved at the time of surgery.
